A 4-day-old girl was bitten by the family’s dog before she died from her injuries, according to Arkansas authorities.
Cave Springs police and fire were called to a dog attack around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, according to a news release.
There, they found the newborn baby “suffering from severe head injuries,” Cave Springs Lt. Keith Lawson said in a statement.
Emergency responders treated the infant at the scene, officials said, before an ambulance took her to Northwest Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Springdale, about 10 miles southeast of Cave Springs.
The child was then taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, authorities said. She later died from her injuries in the attack.
“The dog was impounded by the police department and euthanized by the local veterinary office in accordance with state law,” Lawson said. Authorities identified the family dog as a 3-year-old Siberian husky.
Police are conducting a standard investigation into the child’s death, the report said. Their findings will be forwarded to the Benton County District Attorney’s Office “so they can make an informed decision as to whether any violations of Arkansas law were committed.”
