An upstate mom loses almost everything she owns to a burst pipe

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Many people upstate are experiencing problems in their homes due to burst pipes, including a single mother of two who lives at Hidden Park Apartments.

She said she opened the door on Christmas Eve and the ceiling was gone, along with almost everything she owned.

“I walked in and boom, my whole floor, my walls, everything was destroyed,” Bria Corey said.

Brio Cory has two sons, 7 and 9 years old.

“She went through all my baby’s shoes, the clothes I put on the floor in a basket got soaked,” she said.

When they opened the door to their apartment, she said everyone started crying.

“He was like mom, we will be in the cold, we have nowhere to go. I thought everything was going to be okay because God always has you,” Corey said.

Corey’s mother said they were told in critical care that a pipe had burst in their apartment.

“They had to come out the night before and shut off the power because the wires, the wires and the water,” Monica Corey said.

Corey said her floors were frozen and her new home is now in ruins.

“I don’t need to start over, I’m a single mother and I’m doing it all myself,” she said.

She said her bed, cots and other items were damaged. Cory said she could only salvage a few things.

“The only thing I could get was a bucket because it had a container that was closed. I couldn’t get anything else,” Corey said. “I guess my TV is water damaged because it wouldn’t turn on.”
Her mother said the family is now looking for funds.

“It’s hard, it’s hard and it’s not fair,” Monica Corey said.

“Pray for me, be sure to pray. I mean, I can take all the help I can get,” Bria Corey said.

On Sunday night, Corey said she stayed with a friend.

“I’m thinking about getting a room and putting all the money I have left to get a room for us,” she said.

7NEWS spoke to the property manager off camera and they said they are aware of the problem and are doing everything they can to fix it.
