Donald Glover originally wanted to finish “Atlanta”After season 2. But now that the show is really over after this year’s third and fourth seasons, the star / creator / executive producer / writer / director / executive music producer told reporters on Thursday that he feels the time was really right.
“Death is natural,” he said during a winter press tour of the Television Critics Association. “I feel that when conditions are needed for something, they happen, and when conditions are not right, they do not happen. I do not feel any longevity. Because then things start to get weird. History has always had to be what it was. And the story, it really was us. Everyone in that writing room, everyone on the set. It really was what we were going through and what we were talking about. … I think it will end well. “
Glover said the decision to end Atlanta was not related to his deal with Amazon, where he signed a rich general pact in 2021. He added that he did not mind revising the series one day. “Of course, if there are grounds for that. As a Christmas special, ”he joked. “It always depends. I like to keep my options open. ”
Stars Brian Tyree Henry and Zazi Bitz said the 4th season know that’s all. “I was a little emotional,” Bitz said, “but I agree with Donald that we’re finishing what seems like a peak, and we’re not letting it go away. I think it’s best to know when it’s over and to know when to move on. We all do other things. But we all joked and said it wouldn’t be funny if 15 years old, if we had grandchildren, came back. But I’m glad I knew it was over because then I could truly lean towards the relationship, knowing it was my last chance to play Wang. Wang changed my life and I fell in love with her. ”
Henry added that “Atlanta” has played such a big role throughout our lives, the ability to play these characters has changed our lives in such a dramatic, drastic and beautiful way. We all want to figure out what’s going to happen to the gang that’s with us. I was wondering, what happens to senior rappers? What is Albert like at 55? Will he still do the same? But that’s a big part of coming to an end. For us, it just naturally felt like the time had come. Atlanta feels like an institution. You go to high school for four years, you go to college for four years, it was our own graduation to go somewhere more. I am so deeply connected to these people. It was the greatest gift to make this show. If we decide to come back together when we turn 65, with arthritis medication and our walkers, we probably will, because we are all connected for the rest of our lives. ”
Without airing a new episode from May 2018, “Atlanta” finally returns with Season 3 on March 24 and then Season 4, which airs this fall. Earlier in the day, FX topper John Landgraf revealed the completion of the show with 4 seasons.
Most of Season 3 was written in the fall of 2019. “We were very excited about it,” said executive producer Stephen Glover. “I remember we thought we’d start filming, and then COVID happened.”
Donald Glover said he almost wants FX to put a disclaimer before the episodes that were written in 2019 because a lot of what’s happening now may look like a parody of what actually happened. “We actually prophesied most of 2020,” he said. “The world is extremely predictable. We really knew how much of this would work out. Everyone should know that we wrote this in 2019. All the shit out there is actually that we say, “Oh, that’s how the cycle works.”
Other than that, “there are some things we changed in Season 4 because I think we’ve all changed,” he added. “We all grew up and just passed our lives. I think COVID was a very prudent time. So we all kind of grew up. The show is very punk in many ways and I think we have become more no punk because we took care of things. ”
Executive producer Stephanie Robinson added: “The seasons reflect where we are in life and you can track it very closely. In the first season it seems to me that we didn’t know what we were doing. And then you start to see Season 2 where we’ve dealt with an amazing amount of success at the same time as the characters. Even in the third season, there is much more maturity and approach to how the characters relate to what is happening.
Season 3 of the series takes place mainly in Europe – where it was mostly filmed during the pandemic. Ern (Donald Glover), Alfred “Paper Fight” Miles (Henry), Darius (LaCate Stanfield) and Van (Bitz) are on tour and orient themselves in their environment as outsiders – adapting to their new success, which they aspired to. Among the topics covered are what it is like to be black and famous both in the United States and abroad. “The third season is about the curse and the curse of whiteness,” Stephen Glover said. “White people have blind spots, obviously for racing and what’s going on. They are also affected. It’s not just black people going through this and it’s hard for them. In fact it also affected you. The first episode perfectly shows how it affects both sides. “
As for Season 4, Donald Glover says the idea was that “more fun. Once you go through this cycle, you realize, oh, we did season 4, like season 1, and it was like you were going to be canceled! ”
