“I’m excited to join Sligo Rovers,” Mata said. “When the chance came, I didn’t have to think about it for long. I want to play games and score goals, and Ireland was very attractive. I used to play in Europe and did it well and I definitely think I will be able to do it again.
“I enjoyed the experience in America last season and I regretted not playing as much as I would have liked. I am very motivated to come to Sligo, play games and score goals.
I do not think that integration will be a problem in an English-speaking country. I’m excited to experience the Irish League and play here.
“It’s just a matter of concentration and I’ll be completely committed to success here.
“Sligo Rovers did well in Ireland, I talked to the coach about what he wants the team to be, and it all led to the fact that I want to be in Sligo and achieve both my own and the team’s goals.”
Meanwhile, Shelburn has also announced the signing of a new Zealander in the form of defender Adam Thomas.
The 29-year-old has coached with Damien Duff’s team in the off-season.

Thomas last played for the Oakleigh Cannons in Australia, having previously been to Team Wellington in his home country.
He represented New Zealand at the 2012 Olympics as well as a minor.
“Adam showed a strange desire to come to Europe on his own to make a career here,” Duff said. “He trained very well with us and paid off brilliantly with the team. It has high quality and versatility to play in many positions. He is a great addition to the band »
Thomas added: “The training was a class with very high standards, as well as with intensity and focus on the position, which I really enjoyed. I’ve talked to a few people I know in the league and look forward to a new challenge.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to coach Damien Duff and in terms of defender Joey O’Brien, who is top notch. It’s very exciting. “
The SSE Airtricity League Premier League kicks off this Friday night, and Slige hosts the Bohemians and Shells at home at St. Patrick’s Athletic.
