St. CATHERINES SOUND, Ga. (WSAV) — A rare humpback whale sighting off the coast of Georgia has been captured on incredible video.
The majestic humpback whale was spotted in St. Catherine Sound, south of Savannah, when WSAV viewers Joel and Stephanie Austin were in the bay spreading the ashes of a loved one with family.
Stephanie Austin shared a fascinating story in a Facebook post, which has since been shared by over 1,000 people. You can watch the video above.
Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) biologist Clay George confirmed to WSAV that it was indeed a humpback whale.
He says that although it is very rare to see a humpback in the sound, the young whale was not in danger. In fact, it was most likely feeding on a school of fish.
George also issued a warning to boaters in Georgia, urging them to be careful at all times, as several whales die in boating accidents every year.
