Yuki Tsunoda: “It was a really productive day and a good start to testing”

Yuki Tsunoda received a positive test opening day in 2022 when the Japanese racer passed one hundred and twenty-one laps Route Barcelona-Catalonia.

The Japanese rider was responsible for running first Scuderia AlphaTauri‘s AT03 on Wednesday and he was pleased with how the day went when he ran almost two full races without any drama.

Tsunoda said it is important to increase the mileage of the car, which is the first for AlphaTauri to adhere to the new aerodynamic rules in force in 2022, but the current pace will not be seen until the first round of the season. Bahrain Next month.

“It was a really productive day and a good start to testing for the team,” Tsunoda admitted. “This is the first proper car ride of 2022, so everything we did was very important for our training, because obviously this car is completely different from last year.

“The mileage as well as the changes we made to the setup were key today and we managed to achieve everything we wanted. We’ve found a few things we still need to play with, but we’re happy with the way things are going.

“Today the car was really reliable, we needed to get as much data as possible and we managed it. We have five more days of testing before the first race, I think the car is looking pretty fast now, but we won’t find out about its true performance until qualifying in Bahrain. ”

“We had a very successful first day of testing,” Jonathan Eddols said

Chief Engineer-Racer Jonathan Eddols considered it a “very successful” opening day of testing in Spain, but with an intensive program to be completed over all six days of work, it is too early to fully understand AT03.

Eddols said it’s important to start understanding AT03 on Wednesday, and going through as many laps as they did was a good start. And head to Thursday where Pierre Gasley to get into a car for the first time, he says he has already learned a lot that the Frenchman can build on.

“We had a very successful first day of testing here in Barcelona,” said Eddols. “With a brand new car, tires and rules, it’s important to first confirm the simulator before the event, so we spent the morning trying out many different directions of settings, and quickly worked out a setup that seemed like a good compromise.

“It remains in the afternoon to start completing the setup of test items and better understand the tires. Yuki was pleased with the feel of the car, it remained reliable all day and we had no serious problems.

“We have an extensive test plan for three days of testing here and then back in Bahrain to ensure we head to the race well prepared and in the best shape. We had a positive first day after our plan, and we have already collected a lot of data, which we will analyze tonight and take into account Pierre’s testing plan, which will come to power tomorrow. “
