Americans lost nearly $ 6 billion from fraud last year News

(CNN) – According to the Federal Trade Commission, American consumers lost about $ 5.8 billion from fraud in 2021.

FTC data show that the money consumers have lost as a result of fraud has grown by more than 70% over the previous year.

The FTC received reports of fraud from nearly 3 million consumers last year, and the most frequently reported fraud was imposters, followed by fraud with online stores.

Prizes, raffles and lotteries; Online services and employment opportunities in business close the top five categories of fraud.

The FTC says there are some common schemes used by fraudsters.

Fraudsters usually pretend to contact you on behalf of the government, such as the Social Security Administration, the Internal Revenue Service or Medicare. Scammers can also say you owe money to the government. Some scammers will contact you and tell you that someone in your family has an emergency.

The FTC urges consumers to protect themselves by refusing to provide personal or financial information in response to a request you did not expect. Also, keep in mind that legitimate organizations do not call, email, or send text messages for confidential information.
