In the four years he lived in Idaho, he never bought a lottery ticket. The Idaho State Lottery announced Wednesday, Nov. 23, that his quick decision paid off.

The Bayview man scratched off the ticket and couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“I thought maybe I just didn’t understand the Idaho Scratch Games, so I waited until my kids got home,” Schmirer told the Idaho State Lottery. “They’ll be honest with me whether I’m crazy or not!”

His children confirmed that he was not crazy and had indeed won $50,000. Schmirer and his son, Westley, drove seven hours and more than 400 miles to Boise to claim their win.

“Besides getting a hotel and a nice meal with Westley tonight, I’m going to pay the bills,” he said. “If there’s enough left, I really hope I get a car with four-wheel drive and no dents from deer!”
