Directors from Ukraine, Syria and Tanzania will receive the FilmAid award
Ukrainian group DocuDays, known for its human rights documentaries, will be honored by the international film organization FilmAid at its annual benefit on October 12 in New York. Now DocuDays is creating a Military Archive, a database of testimonies and evidence of crimes during the war against Russia.
Syrian American actor and director Jay Abdo (pictured) and young Tanzanian filmmaker Martha Mgwada will also be honored at the event.
Abdo stars in Neighbors, which hits theaters in December. Mgwada, a former stand-up comedian, trains new filmmakers through FilmAid and makes short films about sexual and gender-based violence and other issues affecting young Tanzanians.
“We hadn’t done anything like the War Archives before, but we just felt it was really important. These materials can be used during war crimes investigations and for future documentaries,” says Yulia Kartashova of DocuDays, who will travel from Kyiv to New York to receive the FilmAid award.
