ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia linebacker Jalen Carter, tipped to be one of the top players in next month’s NFL draft, has been charged with reckless driving and speeding in connection with a crash that killed offensive lineman Devin Wheelock and a recruiting officer.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department issued an arrest warrant obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday that alleges Carter was racing his 2021 Jeep Trackhawk against a 2021 Ford Expedition driven by the recruiter, 24-year-old Chandler LeCroy, who ruled until January 15 wreck.

According to Lt. Sean Barnett of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Carter was scheduled to arrive in Indianapolis on Wednesday for the NFL scouting combine and is expected to process an arrest warrant when he returns to Athens.

“My understanding is that Mr. Carter is taking steps to turn himself in,” Barnett said in an email to the AP.

The crash came just hours after the Bulldogs celebrated their second straight national championship with a parade and ceremony that killed LeCroy and Wheelock.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart expressed concern about the allegations in a statement released Wednesday.

“The charges announced today are deeply troubling, especially as we are still struggling to come to terms with the terrible loss of two beloved members of our community,” Smart said.

“We will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities, supporting these families and assessing what we can learn from this terrible tragedy.”

According to the arrest warrant, an Athens police investigation revealed that LeCroy and Carter were driving their vehicles “in a racing manner” after leaving downtown Athens around 2:30 a.m.

The warrant said evidence showed the vehicles were changing lanes, driving in the center lane, driving in oncoming lanes, passing other motorists and driving at high speeds “in an apparent attempt to outrun each other.”

Police determined that LeCroy’s Expedition was going about 104 miles per hour (167 kilometers per hour) shortly before the crash. LeCroy’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.197 at the time of the crash, the ruling said. The legal limit in Georgia is 0.08.

Wheelock, 20, died at the scene of the accident. LeCroix was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Offensive lineman Warren McClendon, who just announced plans to enter the NFL draft, suffered minor injuries. Georgia football player Victoria Bowles was hospitalized with more serious injuries.
