New coronavirus could lead to epidemic of chronic fatigue syndrome, doctors recently said NorthJersey.com.
What’s going on: The new coronavirus continues to infect people across the country. In many cases, survivors of COVID-19 result in long-term health problems, otherwise known as prolonged COVID-19. NorthJersey.com.
- One of these long-term symptoms of COVID-19 includes chronic fatigue syndrome – or myalgic encephalomyelitis, otherwise known as “I”.
What they say: “When we saw what was happening at COVID, people in the ME community were among the first to raise the alarm that it would be a massive event with a disability,” said Robert Sklans of Methuhen, board member of the #MEAction Network advocacy group. NorthJersey.com.
- “We looked at the symptoms of prolonged COVID and said there would be a lot of people with ME / CFS.”
Other symptoms: A a new study published in the medical journal The BMJ found that approximately one-third of patients with COVID-19 developed a new symptom of COVID-19 a few months after infection.
- These symptoms often include fatigue, respiratory failure and high blood pressure.
Big picture: When states begin to lift COVID-19 restrictions and masks, vulnerable people – including high-risk diseases and long-term symptoms of COVID-19 – are at greater risk.
