MTA faces backlash over fare hikes

The Macon-Bibb Transit Authority has faced opposition from a group of concerned citizens after announcing plans to raise bus fares in response to inflation. A protest was held in front of the Macon train station on Friday.

MACON, Ga. (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon-Bibb Transit Authority has faced backlash from a group of concerned citizens after announcing plans to increase bus fares due to inflation. A protest was held in front of the Macon train station on Friday.

The group expressed concern about the new price hikes, especially for paratransit services, which they say will have a significant impact on low-income citizens, seniors and the disabled. Macon-Bibb Commissioner Elaine Lucas addressed the meeting, outlining the demands and actions of the various groups involved to stop the price hikes.

Wade Horton, a frequent rider on the paratransit service, highlighted the difficulty many riders face in affording the service.

“Literally the other day, I saw a woman who had had a stroke and was on a cane and she was coming off dialysis and the bus stopped and she said, ‘I don’t have a fare,’ and they drove off,” he said. “She was more concerned about getting to treatment, and she would figure out how to get home afterward.”

Protesters say they may boycott the transit system. The group believes the proposed fare increase would disproportionately affect low-income residents who already face significant challenges accessing transportation.

Macon Transit Authority officials defended the proposed fare increase, citing rising operating costs.
