SANDY SPRINGS, GA (CBS46) – On Thursday, police released a ten-minute video camera with police responding to an intrusion into a house in Sandy Springs in November.
The video is graphic, so CBS46 decided to share only a few shots in the attached video.
Captain Mike Lindbergh said they shared videos to highlight the dangers of patrolling.
“It’s a reminder of the work we do,” Lindberg said in an interview Thursday. “The dangers that come with work, and the dangers that lurk because of the lack of better work, are right around every call.”
Police said officers were originally called in to respond to a suspected burglar at a house in Sandy Springs.
When they arrived, the owners took the officers inside, where the suspect was on the second floor.
The video shows officers trying to negotiate with a suspect identified as Matthew Lanz.
As Lanz descends the stairs, the video shows him pulling out a large knife and stabbing the officer several times.
Lindberg said the officer received six stab wounds to the neck and back of the head, nearly missing vital areas.
Lindberg confirmed that the officer had recovered at a nearby hospital and returned to the army.
Four other officers were required to detain Lance, who was shot with tasers and shot with pepper balls before the officer shot him with a pistol.
Eventually the officers were able to arrest Lance, and the video shows the officers providing Lance with medical care before the ambulance arrived.
Lindberg said Lanz survived.
After the incident, officers learned that Lanz was involved in the double murder of the couple Acworth – his neighbors Timothy and Amber Hicks.
Lance is in jail awaiting his next appearance in court.
Lindstrom believes neighbors called police when they saw an unknown man wandering around the Sandy Springs area.
“They called when they saw something suspicious. It could easily turn into something bigger – as we know after the fact, “Lindstrom said on Thursday.
