The UN supported Climate Center of SMEs today published the results of a survey of some member companies, which emphasize that small businesses around the world are increasingly involved in the need for decarbonisation, but face significant obstacles when they seek to combat increasing climate risks.
A survey of nearly 200 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) found that half now estimate their emissions, and 60 percent plan to reduce their carbon footprint.
However, two-thirds of small business owners expressed concern that they did not have the necessary skills and knowledge to deal with the climate crisis. More than 60 per cent said a lack of skills and knowledge was a major cause of delayed climate action, while 48 per cent cited funding problems and 40 per cent said they found it difficult to find time to prioritize the area. climate action.
Moreover, about 70 percent of SMEs said they needed access to external funds to reduce emissions faster or even more, while only a third said they were currently offered financial incentives to reduce emissions.
However, the report also found a significant restrained desire to accelerate climate efforts among small business owners. Eight out of 10 participants said they considered reducing emissions a “high priority”, with a similar section taking measures to reduce energy and waste consumption, 64 per cent working to train staff on the need to reduce emissions and just over half planning to upgrade facilities and equipment. But despite such efforts, only 60 percent of SMEs taking emission reduction measures have a long-term emission reduction plan.
“On an individual scale, each small business has relatively moderate carbon emissions,” said Maria Mendilius, CEO of We Mean Business Coalition, founding partner of MME Climate Hub. “Together, however, these small businesses have a huge impact, both on the planet and on their communities. To limit the effects of climate change and create a fair future that leaves no one behind, every business, every size, needs the tools to prioritizing climate action ”.

In particular, the hub provides CO2 Insights Industrial Tool designed by Regulatorywhich helps businesses understand their baseline emissions as well as Climate Fit’s toolkit Cambridge University Institute for Sustainable Leadership (CISL) and Business for social responsibility to help small businesses are learning practical skills to reduce carbon emissions. In addition, the center provides a reporting structure for SMEs and a surveyor to access financial support.
