Rain to end week again – 41NBC News

MACON, Ga. (41NBC/WMGT) – A pair of cold fronts will bring rain to Middle Georgia Thursday and Friday.

In Middle Georgia, the forecast for Thursday is a little split. An approaching cold atmospheric system is expected to stall in the center of the area. That will lead to high temperatures in the mid-70s in the northern half of the region, while the southern half sees highs near or above 80 degrees. Winds will also be split, with a northerly flow being the main reason northern counties see cooler highs; the south-west direction will be preserved in the southern half of the region. Less cloudiness is also expected in the southern half. Nevertheless, there is a possibility of short-term rains and thunderstorms in places today. They will move from the southwest to the northeast and will be more likely in counties that are not affected by the cold front in the afternoon.

Tl

A chance of showers tonight with a couple of thunderstorms in the evening. At night, the wind will change from southeast to southwest. Skies will remain cloudy, but once a 2nd light wave of showers moves in (around midnight or shortly thereafter), there should be no rain in Middle Georgia until near sunrise. Temperatures will mostly be in the low 60s.

Friday remains an interesting event around Middle Georgia, and a lot will be decided tonight. A storm system approaching from the west is expected to bring strong storms to ArkLaTex this evening and tonight. That same cold front will be moving in our direction when we leave tomorrow. For now, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a “slight” level 2 severe weather threat for tomorrow that includes the northern half of the region. By comparison, tonight’s risk at ArkLaTex is a “moderate” risk level of 4.

The uncertainty in the forecast is twofold. The low pressure system will take a more northerly track as a result of the persistent high pressure that is over southern Florida. This will cause the cold front to weaken as it advances into Georgia from the west. At the same time, however, the atmosphere over much of the region will continue to be very warm and humid compared to the current pattern. This could potentially lead to thunderstorms a little further east, and unfortunately with the presence of low wind shear, a strong storm or two is possible. The main danger is strong wind, small hail or short-lived tornado.

Without thunderstorms, tomorrow will be partly cloudy, warm, very windy. Highs will be in the upper 80s for most of the region, with south-southwest winds gusting to 50 mph. Sustained speeds will be in the 15-35 mph range. Assuming the cold front breaks up and the storms aren’t able to continue, Middle Georgia is still likely to see a few showers. Temperatures should drop into the low 50s by Saturday morning after a cold front passes through.

Saturday and Sunday will be sunny with temperatures in the low to mid 70s. Sunday may be a couple of degrees warmer in places than Saturday, but there will be stronger winds on Saturday due to the recent passage of a cold front on Friday.
