Renault outperforms reliability with the new F1 split-turbo engine

The French manufacturer has built a completely new power unit for this season, which is the most indicative of the fact that it has finally adopted the concept of a split turbine and compressor, for the first time Mercedes.

Renault is clear that it needs to raise its power figures if it is going to fight on the cutting edge for the next few years, and Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi says he urged his engines not to play safety and focus only on reliability.

Instead, he told them to keep looking for better performance, as he believes it will be easier to cure a fast but fragile power unit under the new rules of freezing a Formula 1 engine than to make up for a shortage of lap time.

Speaking to some media outlets, including Motorsport.com, about the choice of engine development, Rossi said: “It’s either reliability or performance, because it’s usually hard for you to have both. So that’s just where you push the envelope. ? “

“During the year [in development] we have experienced a couple of moments when there was no reliability, but it is our choice, because the only lever we will have at our disposal this year is reliability.

“So I told the team: you pull the envelope away and I don’t care. I’d like to reduce performance, but I know I’ve reached the peak of performance I can get than being reliable and just feel comfortable with a reliable engine that doesn’t provide performance.

“By the way, this was the approach of the past. So we moved the other way. And the good news is – we’ve traveled thousands of miles with this new PU in the last few weeks.”

Rossi has confirmed that in 2022 Renault has gone on a split turbo route with other changes that will bring significant benefits to the Alpine package.

“The engine has been completely redesigned,” he said. “When I say brand new, it’s even in concept.

“First, it’s a split turbo, but it’s just one of the visible elements that will make it more compact, allow us to move it closer to the driver and thus change the center of gravity of the car.

“It is lighter and able to operate in a much wider range of conditions, temperatures and pressures. So for us it’s really like a game change.

“And I hope this will allow us to catch up and reduce the gap from the front.”
