SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — With the holidays right around the corner, grocery store prices are much higher than in years past.
According to the USDA, the average price of a frozen turkey is now $1.99 per pound. This is 73% more than last year. And the typical trimmings, like stuffing and potatoes, are all up. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that overall food prices are up 13% this year.
Just one group that will feel the effects of higher prices, especially hard this holiday season, is single mothers.
However, a local nonprofit is helping them make ends meet, and you can help.
Shelter From the Rain Inc is partnering with Simply Savannah Marketing to raise funds for single mothers and their children on Tuesday, November 15 at Ardsley Station. The event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10.
Founded in 2010, Shelter From the Rain is a Savannah-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving single mothers. Their vision is to build a community of strong, economically independent single mothers through education, mentorship, personal and professional development, home ownership, health and wellness.
The organization extends a special invitation to all media teams in Savannah to help spread the word about how important it is for our community to rally around our single-parent families and make sure they have the resources and support they need to thrive.
“We really want this to be an event that raises awareness of the needs of the families we serve, especially during the holiday season when times can be more stressful and difficult for single mothers,” said Jennifer T. Graham, Executive director of Shelter From Rain. .
Shelter From the Rain will be working hard this holiday season to serve single moms and their children this Christmas. This event will be a fun way for the community to help this organization set single moms up for success and end the year with hope and joy. For tickets, please Click here.
