Patent noticed Walkman Blogdescribes an engineering prototype for a couple overhead headphones with the model number YY2954 – and if it’s the successor to Sony’s flagship headphones, you can be almost sure it’s the code for the Sony WH-1000XM5.
If this patent is for the Sony WH-1000XM5, perhaps we first saw the rumors wireless headphones. It contains a fairly simple illustration of a pair of overhead headphones with oval-shaped headphones, a thin headband and an FCC sign on a tag under the left ear cushion.
According to The Walkman Blog, this could mean that the WH-1000XM5 will have a different rim style than their predecessors. The WH-1000XM4 has a nameplate on the bottom of the bandage, but the fact that it has been moved under the earmuffs suggests that the new bandage may be too thin to accommodate the plate or may be made of a material that may not be easy stamped – like metal.
Sure, it’s possible that Sony decided to move the nameplate to a less prominent place for a cleaner look, but the idea of a pair Sony headphones with a smooth metal bandage as in Noise-canceling headphones Bose 700 quite attractive.
Like the Sony WH-1000XM4, the next Sony headphones will initially be in black or silver. The Walkman Blog has published a list of imports of Sony headsets from Hong Kong to India, which, in his opinion, relates to the headphones described in the patent – and this list contained two colors, silver and black.
The patent also shows that the internal battery level of these headphones is 3.8V, as opposed to the 3.7V we got from the WH-1000XM4. This means that the Sony WH-1000XM5 can improve the 38-hour battery life of its predecessors. This figure was already impressive, so even more music playback time would be a great selling point for subsequent Sony headphones.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 can also come with fast charging support, with a patent that describes a 5V / 9V USB level for charging.
Will the Sony WH-1000XM5 be released in 2022?
It’s important to remember that patent listing is never a firm guarantee that an AR product will ever see the light of day – but we would be very surprised if Sony didn’t work on developing its hugely successful WH-1000XM4 headphones.
If the headphones in this patent are indeed the Sony WH-1000XM5, they could be released in August 2022 – this is because the document’s privacy agreement expires on August 8th.
The release date of the Sony WH-1000XM5 in August definitely makes sense. After all, the Sony WH-1000XM4 was released on August 6, 2020, while their predecessors, Sony WH-1000XM3 launched on August 30, 2018.
There is a clear release schedule – every two years in August 2018 we have another model in the WH-1000X line. In any case, we’ll be keeping a close eye on all Sony for the next few months, especially since the release date of 2022 could put the WH-1000XM5 in direct competition with other rumored headphones such as Apple AirPods Max 2 and the first Sonos headphones.
