WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (WHNT) — the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a slightly different approach to flu vaccines for those 65 and older ahead of the upcoming season.
For most of the population, the CDC says any flu shot is better than none. However, the organization recommends three specific vaccines for people over 65:
Quadrivalent vaccines have four different strains of the flu virus, according to the CDC, and will help seniors fight off the versions of the flu that are expected to circulate this year.
These three suggested shots are made with an egg-based adjuvant, an ingredient that will support a strong immune system. Health officials say that adjuvanted flu vaccines are usually more effective for people over the age of 65.
Everyone in the U.S. over the age of 6 months is recommended to get the flu vaccine, and those with the CDC say the sooner the better, though ideally they recommend getting the shot by the end of October.
Health experts add that it’s safe to get both the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu shot at the same visit, although reactions from getting both can lead to more systemic reactions, such as fatigue and headaches.
