The European Union (EU) plans to set up a € 6 billion satellite communications system to help eliminate “no stains” and ensure the security of confidential communications and intelligence.
Brussels says satellite infrastructure is becoming increasingly important to governments, industry and society, and that its space strategy must reflect new challenges and technological developments.
The proposed system will provide additional resilience and protection for surveillance, protection and other activities, and provide uninterrupted and cost-effective connectivity for areas with poor coverage.
EU satellite network
Satellite is seen as a way to connect in rural areas, where fixed and mobile communications are lacking for economic or logistical reasons, and low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks provide significant speed and latency advantages over conventional technologies.
This extension will support digital services throughout the bloc and help remove any barriers to the EU’s digital single market.
In general, the EU predicts that the network will give the European economy 17.24 billion euros, will promote technological development and create jobs in the space industry.
“Space technology is important for our daily lives and security. Today’s initiatives will ensure a secure and efficient connection at all times, “said Executive Vice President Margrethe Westager.” It benefits both citizens and governments. It will play a key role in Europe’s digital transformation. And make us more competitive. I hope that the EU’s approach to space traffic management and space technology ensures safe and sustainable use of space in the long run. “
Separately, the EU has also proposed a new framework for space motion control (STM), saying a new approach is now needed due to the increasing number of satellites in orbit.
