The incidence of Omicron is declining, but this “overt” variant of the coronavirus is growing

Jacksonville, Florida – Cases of the Omicron variant have decreased nationally, but BA.2, known as the Stealth Omicron, is just beginning.

The subvariant has been found in at least 74 countries and 47 states.

Dr Jeffrey Goldhagen of UF Health Jacksonville said the surge was inevitable.

“Any opinion that we have, so to speak, come out of the woods in relation to SARS and COVID-19 is simply wrong,” said Dr. Goldhagen.

Studies show that the new option can cause serious diseases such as the delta option.

Immunity from vaccines alone is not enough. Vaccines along with regulatory vaccination restore protection, making the chances of getting sick after infection about 74% less, doctors say.

“Booster vaccination really protects against this new option or sub-option against omicron,” Dr. Goldhagen said.

Studies also show that stealth omicron is resistant to sotrovimab, a drug used to treat monoclonal antibodies used against omicron.

“We need to remember that those who work for Delta do not work for Omicron. One that acts on omicron does not seem to be effective against this new disease. It will be a story that continues to unfold, ”said Dr. Goldhagen.

Dr Goldhagen said the herd’s immunity was the only way back to normal life.

“There will be a time when we can probably take a deep breath and relax, and that’s when we achieve herd immunity, which doesn’t just happen through natural infection, it has to happen by expanding immunizations and vaccines in a significant number of our communities,” Dr. Goldhagen said.
