The McDuffie Guide treats single parents in a retreat for rejuvenation

Thomson, Georgia (WJBF) – McDuffie’s leadership it is a program that focuses on leadership development in McDuffie County.

Every year as part of the McDuffie Leadership they try to do one community project.

This year they have come forward with two projects. The first was the renovation of the Children’s Enrichment Center, and recently – retreats for single parents.

“They will be rejuvenated, educated, informed and pampered. We have information tables for them, we have special guest speakers, we have people who talk about suicide awareness, about mental health, ”said Elizabeth Brown, Leadership McDuffie.

The event was attended by many single parents with different and different backgrounds. McDuffie’s leadership wanted to make sure the parents had a good time learning about what was going on in their community.

“So many times in the community we don’t know about the resources available to them. Our recent 2020 census showed that there was a high percentage of single people in McDuffie County. That’s why we chose this particular genre, but all the information is here; sometimes you don’t know who your city government is, sometimes you don’t know about the social services resources available to you, and sometimes you just don’t know what questions to ask. So this is a pioneering attempt to wake up the community on some issues that we may not have discussed, but need to discuss, ”Brown said.

“A lot of information will be distributed, and that’s great. All I can say is great, and I am grateful for the people involved in the current class of leaders to make such things happen, ”said Mayor Kenneth Usry.

The event was a success not only for parents but for society as a whole.

“We know that due to COVID-19 over the last two years we have been very limited in how we could build with each other through community, but today we are going to talk about it if we also practice it,” – said guest speaker Olga Bolden-Tyler, dean of the College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences at the University of Taskiga.

The current McDuffie Leadership class hopes that similar events will continue in the future, and for the parents involved, it is a day that will stay with them for years to come.

“I’m so excited to be here, to be a single parent, and I think this rejuvenation retreat is awesome. We all, as single parents, have to go out and sometimes let our hair down and do what needs to be done. I want to thank each of you who collected this today. I hope this is not the last event, and there will be many more, ”said single mother Lashavna Howard.
