Ukraine President Vladimir Zelensky asked Russian citizens to explain their views on Russian aggression against his country, saying he did not want a war, but that his country would defend itself against hostilities.
“We don’t need another Cold War, a bloody war, or a hybrid war,” Zelensky said in a video released Thursday morning local time, hours before Russia’s final invasion of his country.
“Today I initiated a telephone conversation with the President of the Russian Federation. The result was silence. Although this is the Donbass, where there should be silence,” he added.
Zelensky said the goal of his administration is peace Russia.
“They say that Ukraine may pose a threat to Russia. This has not happened in the past or now, and will not in the future. Our main goal is to maintain peace in Ukraine and protect Ukrainian citizens,” said Zelensky.

“If Russia’s leadership does not want to sit at the table with us to make peace, then perhaps it will sit at the table with you. Russia wants war? I would very much like an answer to this question. But this answer depends only on you, the citizens. Of the Russian Federation, ”he said.

In the video, Zelensky also called on his citizens to remain steadfast.

“But if we are attacked by the military, if they try to take away our freedom, our lives, the lives of our children, we will defend ourselves,” he added. “If you attack, you will see our faces, not our spines, our faces.”
