SPARTANBURG, TREASURY (WSPA) – A bill proposed by an upstate lawmaker would treat abortion as murder and make abortions punishable by death.
Representative Rob Harris is a Republican from Spartanburg County.
He said he filed House Bill 3549 in December 2022, titled the South Carolina Equal Prenatal Protection Act.
If passed, the bill would amend the state statutes to state that life begins at conception.
“Fundamentally, our US and South Carolina constitutions provide equal protection and due process for all lives. Equal protection of life and due process of law if you are charged with taking life,” said Representative Harris. “It doesn’t change any of that. The first thing he does is identify the person. So far in South Carolina we have lacked the ability to identify an individual.”
The bill is still being considered by the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives.
