Utah Runnin ’Utes recorded on Saturday their first Pac-12 road since February 2019, beating Cal Bears 60-58 in Berkeley, California, a couple of nights after upsetting the Stanford Cardinal.
Jordan Shepherd of Cal had a chance to win the buzz game for the Bears, but his 3-point attempt from a distance of about 35 feet was not close.
The shot was made after Lazar Stefanovic and Marco Anthony made 3 of 4 free throw attempts at the Utes goal.
Utah’s Branden Carlson suffered an ankle injury at the end of the game and did not play in the last 3 minutes 33 seconds.
Here are three keys to Utah’s victory at the Haas Pavilion:
• Anthony led “Utes” with 13 points with 5 of 11 shots, and also held Jordan Shepherd, a leading Cal score with an average of 14.3, to 10 points.
• Utah was only 2 of 14 from the 3-point range, but kept Cal to 3 of 16 with deep defensive play. Utah was 14 of 17 from the free throw line, and Cal was 19 of 21.
• Utah received 21 points from its bench, while Cal received just 10 points from the bench. Runnin ‘Utes also scored 34 of them 60 points in the paint.
