Zhou Guanyu extends his stay at Alfa Romeo until 2023

Zhou Guanyu extended his stay with Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN after an impressive first year with the team, meaning he will be playing for them in 2023.

2022 year Bahrain Grand Prix went down in history, as the first Chinese driver took part in a FIA Formula 1 World Championship race and Zhou showed his worth by scoring points in his debut race. The Chinese driver has developed a good relationship with much more experienced teammate Valtteri Bottas, with the former mentoring him during his first year in the sport.

Zhou has six points this season, an impressive number for a rookie, and could have had more, but he was unlucky in several races throughout the year. On top of that, he contributes not only on the track, but also with his work on the simulator and his general attitude towards the Alfa Romeo team.

Despite an impressive first season, Zhou will be pushing for more next season as he looks to cement his status in Formula 1.

“I am happy and grateful to Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN for the opportunity to be part of the team for another season. Getting to Formula 1 was a dream and the feeling of racing for the first time will stay with me forever: the team was incredibly supportive, welcoming me from day one and helping me adapt to the most challenging series in motorsport.

I want to achieve more in this sport and with the team and the hard work we have put in since the start of the year is just the first step to what we want to achieve next season. There is still a lot to learn, a lot to develop, but I am confident in our work: I look forward to the next chapter of our history together.”

team leader, Frederick Wasser was also pleased with the announcement and hopes Zhou can continue his success.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Zhou. From his first day with the team, at the Abu Dhabi test last year, he impressed me with his approach to work, which is always a very positive trait.

“We knew he was fast, but the way he adapted to Formula 1 in such a short time was one of the best surprises of our season. He is a very nice guy, everyone in the team likes both his personality and his attitude.

“He had the humility to ask questions and learn from both the engineers and Valtteri, and the intelligence to use all the information to improve race after race. He’ll have that experience to build on next season and I’m sure he’ll take another step forward as we continue to develop our squad.”
