The debut of the new Lexus NX marked the beginning of a new design direction for the Japanese manufacturer. Tsuneo Kanasugi, head of NX’s exterior design department and assistant chief designer of Toyota Europe Design Development in Sofia-Antipolis (France), talks about the creative process that led to the definition of the new model.
What are the main differences from the previous model?
“At first glance, the obvious connection between the design and the first model, but its effect and attractiveness were emphasized by more pronounced contrasts – sharp rigidity and warm elegance, which give the car even more visual appeal. You can see this, for example, in the different surface volumes at the top and bottom of the side doors. We kept the avant-garde and provocative image of the first NX, but the design was improved to make it more glamorous and more sustainable. The key direction was to give the NX originality based on its proportions, creating the feeling of a solid metal body with seductive shapes ”.
