SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The possibility of a school shooting is enough to scare parents and students, whether it turns out to be a hoax or not. Something like what happened Wednesday at Savannah High School is traumatic for everyone.

On this Wellness Wednesday, WSAV addressed this particular injury with Memorial Health Behavioral Health Manager Mary Jo Horton.

Here are her tips for getting through an emotional crisis, even when your feelings are overwhelming.

Going through an emotional crisis
• Trauma affects people even when they are physically safe
• Emotional response reflects physical trauma
• Imports to process feelings and drive physical response

When the emotional response is overwhelming
• Keep in mind that these responses can be lengthy and would benefit from additional help
• A new trauma can trigger past feelings of trauma and anxiety
• If your functioning is impaired, give yourself the opportunity to seek help
